This specialty of computer engineering requires adequate knowledge of electronics and electrical systems. Engineers working in this area work on enhancing the speed, reliability, and energy efficiency of next-generation very-large-scale integrated circuits and microsystems. An example of this specialty is work done on reducing the power consumption of VLSI algorithms and architecture.

Computer hardware engineers use computer programming tools to analyze the digital circuits in hardware to determine the best design. Many hardware engineers design devices used in manufactured products that incorporate processors and other computer components and that connect to the Internet. For example, many new cars, home appliances, and medical devices have Internet-ready computer systems built into them. Computer hardware engineers research, design, develop, and test computer systems and components such as circuit boards. Computer Engineering is the field that studies the science and technology of design, implementation and validation of both hardware and software components of computing systems.

The courses in this category are Fundamentals of Logic Design, Circuit Analysis, Electronics I, Object-Oriented Programming, Data Structures and Algorithms, Signals and Systems, and Computer Organization and Assembly Language. In addition, a lab on Computer Engineering Workshop has also been added to give the students a taste of computer hardware right in the first semester. Many students are required to participate in a co-op program while at university to gain real world experience in their chosen field.
